Frank Ball
Frank Ball and Mike McGinley are co-founders and Managing Partners of New Dominion Angels, a membership-based investor group formed in 2008 to accelerate Virginia's emergence as a hub of innovation and entrepreneurship. Frank Ball has also founded or co-founded four other businesses in Virginia. Frank is also an executive coach and organizational consultant. He holds degrees from Davidson College and The George Washington University. He is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of American Public University System and sits on the boards of Mom Made Foods and Analytic Advantage, Inc. Mike McGinley also is an executive coach and principal in Element North, a consultancy focusing on leadership development. He earned his MBA from The Darden School at UVA and leads a private foundation in Richmond aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty through financial and leadership education. Rachel Gutter, Director, Center for Green Schools When the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council was established in 2010 to serve as the driver for the green schools movement, USGBC appointed Rachel Gutter to take the reins. Rachel came to USGBC in 2007 to oversee the launch of LEED for Schools, a version of USGBC’s green building certification program that facilitates the design, construction and operations of high-performance, green schools. Captain Barrington Irving
In 2007, Captain Barrington Irving became the youngest person, at 23, and the first black pilot to fly solo around the globe. Born in Jamaica and brought up in inner-city Miami, Barrington saw a football scholarship as his route to college until, inspired by a Jamaican airline pilot who became his mentor, he decided to pursue a career in aviation. Barrington founded the nonprofit Experience Aviation, offering STEM-based programs and career guidance to students in the Miami area. Life for Kakenya Ntaiya was supposed to follow the traditional path. Engaged at age 5, she was to be circumcised by the age of 13, an event that would mark the end of her education and signal her readiness for marriage. But Kakenya had a different plan. First, she negotiated with her father: she would be circumcised only if she could also finish high school. He agreed. Then she negotiated with the village elders to do what no girl had ever done: leave her village in Kenya to go to college in the U.S. She promised that she would use her education to benefit her community. Fred Tutman
Before founding the Patuxent Riverkeeper organization, Fred Tutman spent nearly 25 years as a media producer and consultant on assignments all over the globe. As a volunteer activist, he has been involved in many civic causes related to conservation of the region’s waterways and has long been a zealous presence in zoning and planning causes aimed at preserving rural lands along the Patuxent River. After learning of the Waterkeeper movement while a mid-life law student, Fred became the 165th Riverkeeper in the world in 2004. In addition to his duties on the Patuxent, Fred teaches Environmental Law and Policy at St. Mary’s College of MD and serves on the Board of several environmental organizations . Chris Waddell
Chris Waddell was a promising skier at Middlebury College in 1988 when a skiing accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. Determined to return to the slopes, in just a few years he was named to the US Disabled Ski Team. The most decorated male skier in Paralympic history, Chris won 12 medals over four games, and has medaled in both summer and winter games. He is the first paraplegic to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro unassisted, and he was inducted into both the Paralympic Hall of Fame and the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. Chris has been named the Dalai Lama's unsung hero of compassion and has been featured in numerous publications, including Outside Magazine, Skiing, Ski, and National Geographic Explorer. Before joining Trout Unlimited in September 2001, Chris Wood served as the Senior Policy and Communications Advisor to the Chief of the US Forest Service for five years.
