Carol Colleran

Carol Colleran pioneered the development of addiction treatment for older adults.  Beginning as a counselor at the Hazelden Foundation, Carol retired as an Executive Vice President at The Hanley Recovery Center. Carol worked with Pine Grove Behavioral Health, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in developing its new addiction treatment program for older adults, the Pine Grove Legacy program, opened in May of this year, 2012.   Carol served as a member of the Center for Substance Abuse Task Force for Treatment in Aging and Substance Abuse, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Expert Panel for the Older American Substance Abuse and Mental Health Assistance Center. She was named to SAMHSA’s National Advisory Council, which advises, consults and makes recommendations regarding the agency’s programs and policies. The author of numerous articles, and co-author with with Debra Jay of the field's definitive guidebook, Aging and Addiction: Helping Older Adults Overcome Alcohol or Medication Dependence, Carol has also produced videos in cooperation with The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and participated in the award winning PBS video series, "The Doctor Is In," produced by the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Carol has appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America, and NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw. Carol currently consults on program development at the Pine Grove Legacy Program, offering residential addiction treatment to adults over 60 years old at Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services in Hattiesburg, Mississippi Her book on Aging and Addiction may be reviewed or purchased on Amazon
