Dr. Maren Nyer

Dr. Maren Nyer is the Director of Yoga Studies, Depression Clinical and Research Program (DCRP), Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Director of Professional Development for the Research Coordinators in the DCRP at MGH. In addition, she is an Instructor at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Assistant in Psychology at MGH. Dr. Nyer just received a competitive Loan Repayment Program Award for Clinical Research from the National Institutes of Health: National Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine to support her research on Bikram Yoga. She completed her pre-doctoral psychology internship (2009-2010) at MGH/HMS, after which time she worked as a post-doctoral fellow under the mentorship of Dr. Maurizio Fava at the DCRP until obtaining a staff position in September 2012. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Cornell University and PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Virginia. Dr. Nyer’s research interest is in the amelioration of mood disorders and associated symptoms, specifically developing and evaluating innovative treatments for depression. Dr. Nyer is the Principal Investigator on two studies. The first, a pilot trial of Bikram Yoga for the treatment of depression. The second, to adapt and evaluate Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills groups for patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and suicidal ideation. This research is supported by a Kaplen Fellowship and Livingston Award from HMS. Dr. Nyer has published more than sixteen peer-reviewed articles, in numerous journals including Depression and Anxiety, Annals of Clinical Psychiatry, Diabetes Therapeutics and Technologies, and The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry
