Melanie Holmes says, "The Female Assumption: A Mother's Story, Freeing Women from the View that Motherhood is a Mandate, the recipient of a 2014 Global Media Award, is a call to action. Not all women want or are able to achieve motherhood, for various reasons. Viewing all women through the motherhood lens can have precarious results....I came of age in the late 1970s/early 80s. The feminist storms of the 1960s had calmed...I was not raised with the voices of Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan. Growing up in a small Midwestern farm town, the images of women I saw consisted mainly of women pursuing marriage & motherhood. The economy changed in the 1980s, and most families needed two incomes to get by. By the mid-1980s, I was married with a baby, working outside the home full-time, and carrying a very heavy load. Thirty years later, I have experienced marriage, divorce, single motherhood, re-marriage, a challenging step-family situation, and 3 decades of mothering 3 children whom I adore."
