Janice "Jan" Brewer was the 22nd Governor of the state of Arizona. Brewer began her political career in 1982, when she was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives. Subsequently, she then joined the Arizona State Senate for ten years. In 1996, Brewer was elected the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, serving as Chair in 1998 and 2001. She was elected Arizona Secretary of State in 2002, where she served until being elevated to the governorship in 2009. The Governor is active in education, helping to develop policies that gave schools A-F letter grades, provided additional funding to schools that improved student performance, and evaluated and rewarded teachers based on effectiveness rather than seniority.
