James Balog

Shocked by the changes he saw shooting the June ‘07 National Geographic cover story on melting glaciers, James Balog, who has a graduate degree in geomorphology, founded the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS), the most extensive ground-based photographic glacier study ever conducted using innovative time-lapse photography, video, and still photography at sites in Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, Bolivia, British Columbia, the Alps, and the Rockies. Among his awards are the Leica Medal of Excellence, the Rowell Award for the Art of Adventure, and the first-ever International League of Conservation Photographers Award for Conservation Photography. James’ most recent book is Extreme Ice Now: Vanishing Glaciers and Changing Climate: A Progress Report [National Geographic Books, March 2009]. Colleague James Nachtwey says ‘Each new series by James Balog . . . takes us deeper into the ultimate mystery of humanity’s relationship to the natural world. He is a visionary and his works are . . . sacred objects.’ James Balog Director, Extreme Ice Survey eisinfo@mac.com http://www.extremeicesurvey.org http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_Ice_Survey http://www.JamesBalog.com
