Now Playing:Creative Writing and Coaching Those in Poor Health

[Bookmark] Today’s program is different from previous programs. My guest Sara Baker’s approach to coaching is through literature and creative writing. She works with seriously ill people by coaching them in writing memoirs, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama. It is her belief that illness is a crisis which offers both danger and opportunity for growth and that there is a therapeutic connection between health and expressive writing. Research has shown that this belief is not misplaced. It has been demonstrated that creative writing can relieve stress, ease worries, lower our heart rate, and equip us to fight off infections. Through her workshops – which she calls Woven Dialogue Writing Workshops - Sara provides a supportive and trusting environment in which her clients learn methods of unlocking the healing powers of the unconscious, develop self-compassion, discover their unique voices, and explore the depths of their feelings.

This relationship allows for ongoing, continuous learning and offers support, encouragement, and feedback as new approaches and behaviors are tried and practiced. Benefits of this program include exposure to a new helping profession that differs from therapy, pastoral counseling, or mentoring. Discussion of the benefit of More »
