w/ host(s) Robin Kissinger

Now Playing:Approaching Social Justice – Songs in Context

[Bookmark] This episode is a hard look at what can be the global impact of choral singing that respects all cultures. My guest, Dr. Mary Goetze, has spent a decade understanding the impact of learning music from other cultures authentically and respectfully. This covers all aspects of learning and performing the music, from understanding the social context to learning how to produce the correct vocal timbre and inflections, correct pronunciation and accompanying movement. The way people experience singing in other cultures is vastly different from our own which tends to exclude and be focused in competition. We have much to learn from cultures in which singing and dancing are integral to daily life. Learning music in a new manner gets the music into us in a physical, even visceral way, which can be transformative. It becomes possible to embody the new culture to a significant extent. Join us in connecting to the world through singing and experience a whole new world of vocal production.
