“Leadership is a Relationship.” (Kouzes and Posner, 2009) A leader’s ability to build effective relationships is a critical quality that assists in influencing and building teams. The success and quality of work relationships will negatively or positively impact every aspect of an organization from customer satisfaction to goal accomplishment to product quality. When people are able to work well together, they can create a powerful, motivated work environment where everyone want to come to work, feel empowered to achieve excellence and work in concert to solve problems. Effective working relationships form the cornerstone of success for the individual and organization. On today’s show, we will explore what an effective relationship is; why they are important; and how to build and sustain them so that win-wins are always possible.

Dr. Sheryl White, a cultural psychologist, brings over 20 years of experience providing leadership, workforce, and organization development consulting, training, and coaching services to municipalities, nonprofits, educational institutions, and for-profit corporations worldwide. Dr. White, the Vice President of Training and Organization Development at Neighborhood House Association (NHA) in San Diego, CA and is also the founder of NHA’s social enterprise, InnoVisions, which provides professional, leadership, and organization development services to other organizations. Since 1999, Dr. White has served as an executive coach and facilitator with the Center for Creative Leadership. Dr. White is passionate about helping people work better, and better together.

Undraye Howard is vice president of the Center on Leadership at the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities. He also is an adjunct professor at several universities, where he teaches courses on youth, work development, leadership, communication practices and processes, and effectiveness in the human services world. Howard holds master’s in communication with an emphasis in training and development from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree.
