I had come to the conclusion that he had only a few topics to write about, one included his community service trip. I made the mistake of sharing this with his parents and the father said something like “…but I recently listened to a podcast and the guest said she might die if she read another essay about building homes in Costa Rica.” I giggled because I too had found myself saying something similar at one point while at Vassar reading essays Barnes and Noble one winter day. I’m sure the father was perplexed by my laughter. I simply and plainly stated, “Believe me – I completely agree 1000%. But his essay is NOT going to be about what he did – but rather WHY he did it. Most teens get to draft 2 and continue to write WHAT she achieved, WHAT he did, WHAT sport she played, or WHAT role he had, etc. They describe the WHAT – without sharing the WHY.
