Episode Description

In this episode of We R H.O.P.E. “Breaking the Stigma Through Change” Sean will tackle the issue of mental health and illness in hip hop. The communities of color have strayed away from this topic for far to long. People like Justin King are coming out of the shadows to be open, honest and vulnerable about their experiences. Justin’s music isn’t about drugs and alcohol or even about how much money he has but rather about his real-life experiences of love, pain, loss and fear. He is an inspiration to a generation of youth who need something REAL to hold on to. We will find out how HOPE has inspired not only his music but his life. We will dive into some of his tracks and break down the meaning and vulnerability that it took to write and share these songs with the world.

Sean has spent the last several years in the Human Service/Mental Health field. Sean saw a huge gap in the mental health industry while working in the private residential setting. He noticed that it was more about the have and the have nots then anyone would like to admit. This lack of equality pushed Sean to create We R H.O.P.E. Inc. with a colleague. While operating We R H.O.P.E., Sean was simultaneously the Program Manager at a residential treatment center for boys with severe trauma. He has since resigned to focus all of his energy on We R H.O.P.E. Sean hopes to create change in the public schools by bringing support at a much younger age and breaking the stigma of mental illness.
