Episode Description

Have you ever talked with anyone who's been diagnosed as schizophrenic? Today's guest, Lily Bennett (her pen name), has indeed been diagnosed with this mental illness. And her delightful, whimsical, intelligent conversation will destroy any stereotypes you've had about people with this disorder. That is the point of her new memoir, Diary of a Schizo Bitch - to break the stigma associated with mental illness. 'Lily' started out on the autism spectrum in special ed classes, though no one told her why she felt different and was bullied. At age 15, her house was engulfed by fire and the trauma of seeing her classmates stand by, laughing and taking photos, sent her down the road to psychosis. She was primarily diagnosed as having schizophrenia, made manifest through PTSD or by some of the same genes as caused her autism, and sometimes told that it was her obsession with a ouija board that brought on the voices and other psychotic symptoms. Today, she's a therapist herself, helping others.
