Ending Wet Slaughter Markets in the United States...Yes, we have them too!

With the coronavirus believed to have started in a wet market in China, there is an outcry against these bloody and unsanitary retail slaughter markets. But, did you know there are thousands in the Unite States? Yes, in New York City alone, there are more than 80 such markets where a wide variety of animals are slaughtered as the buyer waits to pick up the carcass. Now, Social Compassion in Legislation is proposing legislation to end these establishments in the U.S. Legislation discussed in this broadcast include bills to ban wet markets and possession of endangered species from Africa. And we will explain California's blood bank bill. So much to discuss!

Velez-Mitchell is a graduate of New York University and began her career with reporting stints in Ft. Myers, Florida, Minneapolis and Philadelphia.
Velez-Mitchell is the author of four books, including two New York Times bestsellers, and directed and produced the documentary Anita Velez: Dancing Through Life which won a Gracie award in 2001. She lives with her partner, Donna Dennison, and their 4 companion animals in Los Angeles.
