People living with Alzheimer’s disease is growing rapidly in the U.S. and only about one in four people is properly diagnosed. Alzheimer's disease is one form of dementia which progresses from mild memory loss to severe limitations in all areas of functioning. In the U.S., approximately 5.5 million people of all ages have Alzheimer’s disease; an estimated 5.3 million are 65 and older; with two thirds being women. The prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease doubles every five years beyond the age of 65. In the U.S., someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease almost every 66 seconds, by 2050, that number is expected to drop to every 33 seconds. Alzheimer's Disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S., more than breast and prostate cancer combined. Since 2000, deaths from the disease have risen by 89%. In 2016, approximately 15.9 million family & friends provided 18.2 billion hours of unpaid assistance to people living with Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias.
