Episode Description
Dr. Power discusses the early signs of dementia and how symptoms associated with dementia shift the way in which the person sees the world but also how a diagnosis of dementia impacts how the world sees the person who has been given that diagnosis. This reality can affect a person's willingness to acknowledge symptoms as they become aware of them ultimately impacting their willingness to seek help. Dr. Power eschews referring to the stages often described when discussing dementia, believing that they influence how the person is viewed which is oftentimes through the prism of the diagnosis and what they can no longer do as opposed to the person's present level of function and their intact capabilities. We will discuss a core principle of Dr. Power's work which is non-pharmacological approaches to working with persons with dementia in a way that offers the highest possible level of dignity, respect, quality of life and life with purpose.
