Episode Description

Dr. David M. Lyerly, Ph. D., Chief Science Officer, TechLab, Inc. will be joining us to discuss "C. difficile Infections (CDI) and Secondary Bacterial Pneumonia." Dr. Lyerly will lead us off in an overview of viral respiratory infections and how they can lead to secondary bacterial pneumonia. As a result, antibiotics often are given empirically to prevent these types of secondary infections. Treatment with antibiotics, although justified in the treatment of bacterial pneumonia, is a primary predisposing factor in the onset of C. difficile infections (CDI). This discussion will provide a background on CDI and secondary bacterial pneumonia. The discussion will also include the relationship between viral and bacterial pneumonia, and how they relate to the onset of a CDI. In addition, the challenge of accurately identifying COVID-19 and FLU season will be discussed. Concluding remarks will focus on why antibiotic stewardship remains especially critical during this global pandemic.
