Episode Description

AARP's 2021 legislative agenda includes reforms which will impact quality of life and quality of care for nursing home residents, they include: Improved infection control standards, minimum staffing requirements, adequate PPE supply, ensuring regular virtual visits and advocating for a living wage for healthcare workers who often have to work multiple jobs to make ends meet. One of AARP's recent successes was influencing the end of civil immunity for nursing homes. Governor Ned LaMont signed the legislation which would allow families to pursue legal recourse on behalf of loved ones in nursing homes in the most egregious cases. Nora also explains the money follows the person program which would allow people to remain in their home to receive care. Especially relevant in the present COVID19 climate which has resulted in people's increased reluctance to move into a nursing home environment. Finally, we discuss ageism as it impacts care and treatment of older adults.
