Giving Forward & UpRising: How Yoga Supports Youth Justice
July 16, 2021
Hosted by Christi Anne Bela
Jill Weiss Ippolito & I met at a Marianne Williamson lecture in Los Angeles when I heard about the non-profit she had started "UpRising Yoga" & I had to be a part of it. I was there for the first fundraiser – “A Chance to Heal” in 2012. Since then Jill has seen UpRising, rise indeed, uplifting the lives of both incarcerated youth, as well as the connected branches of probation, justice systems, and homeless. We talk about how Yoga has made a wonderful impact on our lives. Jill shares insight into Yoga being incorporated into therapeutic strategies. It has been used to address depression, anxiety, trauma, and addiction. Yoga has been introduced to adults in state prison as well as to incarcerated youth, with very positive effects. As a result, URY also staged a special 2-hour empowerment program for the girls housed at CJH and has taken part in the “Each One Teach One” conference for transition-aged youth, held by the Department of Children and Family Services. Jill continues to run courses & retreats on trauma-informed yoga, providing phenomenal training that is well-paced, balancing seamlessly difficult topics & practical approaches. We discuss the importance of self-care & how to be aware of burnout when you are doing community & activist work. This conversation will provide insight to know where you are being called to service in the community & how to not be lead by wound alone.
