The Buzz 1: “In 1970, Kermit the Frog [voiced by Muppets creator Jim Henson], sang “It’s not easy bein’ green.” Back then, the notion of being green was largely a fantasy.… [Fast forward] Being green is becoming so ordinary that a 2020 study by the US SIF foundation, a membership organisation focused on sustainability, found that roughly one out of three dollars invested in the US — or $17.1tn — has a sustainable mandate. That is a lot of green.” [ft.com] The Buzz 2: PWC’s 2021 Consumer Intelligence Series survey on ESG reported that 91% of business leaders believe their company has a responsibility to act on ESG issues. 83% of consumers surveyed said companies should be actively shaping ESG best practices. And 86% of employees preferred to support or work for companies that care about the same issues they do. [pwc.com] The Buzz 3: An October 2021 BCG global survey reported that despite good intentions, companies say they are struggling to cut their emissions in line with targets. Their inability to measure appropriately is the leading roadblock. [bcg.com] The Buzz 4: “I was talking with a global company a couple months ago who’s using spreadsheets [to track ESG data] and they know it’s inadequate…but they don’t know where to go…This is not going away… This is the cost of doing business in the 21st century.” [Dr. Mark McNees, Director of ESG Education, Florida State University] “ESG” and “Sustainability” may seem like trendy new buzzwords – because of increased governmental regulations, consumer awareness, and investors’ demands – but what makes this new is the approach as well as the urgency. In the corporate sphere, sustainability gets a lot of attention. Still, little clarity is provided, as many stakeholders and data need to be managed, along with basic systems and the evolving regulatory framework. More focus is needed on the accelerating and simplifying factors that digital transformation can bring to the sustainability journey. Keeping track of the truth through digitalization is crucial for mitigating sustainability risks. With a single source of truth, ESG measures can be scaled, risks can be mitigated, and sustainability ROI can be improved. We’ll ask Shuchi Nijhawan, Joseph Naayem, Indrranil Roychoudhuri and Thomas Harding about the urgency for organizations to tackle this now on ESG and Sustainability Risks: Still Not Serious About It?!
