If you are working on college admissions or are interested in knowing what admissions officers at universities are seeking in a prospective student, this episode of Express Yourself!™ is a must listen. Ruhani, a high school senior, and Keerthi, an eighth grader, interview the eternally knowledgeable and down-to-earth Dr. Don Martin, former Dean of Admissions/Financial Aid, and Dean of Students at Columbia University, The University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and Wheaton College. Dr. Don wrote the book Road Map for Graduate Study: A Guide for Prospective Graduate Students and shares his years of experience and expertise with our hosts. He answers a plethora of questions ranging from what the biggest mistakes applicants make to when is the best time to start thinking about applying to colleges. Dr. Don emphasizes the importance of authenticity, truthfulness, and busts the myth about colleges looking for the “perfect” student. Ruhani peppers the conversation with questions every teen applicant wants to know such as how critical are SAT and ACT scores, the importance of recommendations, and how to write an excellent essay. Keerthi provides another humorous segment with Nerd Extraordinaire talking about facets of debate and how as a 13 year-old eighth grader she knows absolutely nothing about college admissions!
