Episode Description

In 1989, 13-year-old Joe Sullivan was found guilty of burglary and the rape of a 72-year-old woman. With an already extensive rap sheet, he was judged incorrigible by a Florida court and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Now, he's challenging that sentence and the case is presently being heard by the Supreme Court. This week, Crime Prevention Specialist Susan Bartelstone moderates a panel discussion on juvenile sentencing. Her guests are Chicago defense attorney and TV/radio analyst Tamara Holder, who is currently seeking a pardon for a prisoner serving 60 years for a murder committed at age 13; psychotherapist Kathleen O’hara, author of A Grief Like No Other: Surviving the Violent Death of Someone You Love, based on the murder of her son by a juvenile presently serving life; and ex-con Lawrence Lawton, who is now helping kids about to go down the wrong path with his Florida-based Reality Check program; and a call-in from the National Organization for Victims of Lifers.
