Ida Muorie will welcome to the show a Northeastern University's "Sport in Society" Intern, Josh Trautwein and Research Fellow, Dr. Alexis Lyras, a visiting Professor in the Sports Administration program at the University of Louisville to the show to talked about the recent earthquake in Haiti, and the impact the earthquake had in destabilizing the Haitian education system and it community at large. Josh will share his recent experience of going to Haiti after the earthquake, and using his skills to intervene with sports and play programs to bring some emotional and social stabilization back to one community. Dr. Lyras will share the benefits that sports can bring to a community after experiencing the loss of their social structures. Dr. Lyras has conducted research that shows that Psycho social sport programs can provide safe, structural and friendly environment for people to begin to share their emotions through verbal and non-verbal communication. The emphasis is on building social cohesion and encouraging community members to interact and communicate with each other. Sports and physical activity can allow for brief periods of respite, focus attention away from the experience of loss and provide an opportunity to reinforce educational messages. Sports can also provide breathing space for parents and caregivers, highlighting the impact of sport and play on different needs of a community.
