Episode Description

Meg Selig is the author of Changepower! 37 Secrets to Habit Change Success (Routledge, 2009). Whether a person desires to stop smoking, eat healthier, exercise regularly or achieve another lifestyle goal, Changepower describes how to manage these changes in predictable stages. Readers learn to discover their motivators and make the decision to change; find a way to change through either a personal plan or an organized program; bounce back from slips and relapses; and maintain their new habits over time. Selig earned her M.A. Ed in Counseling at Washington University in St. Louis and has been a counselor for over thirty years. For twenty of those years, she has been a Professor of Counseling at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley. Ten years ago Selig created a personal development class, Habit Change, and has taught this class twice-yearly ever since. Many of her students’ success stories appear in Changepower. Selig is a frequent speaker for radio and TV shows, national counseling conferences, community organizations, and educational groups. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor.

Recovery, whether it is from substance abuse or a mental illness, or both requires a treatment plan, which in many cases is as effective as treatments for other chronic illnesses. “One Hour AT A Time” will increase awareness about recovery and decrease the discrimination against individuals in the recovery process. Host Mary Woods, will help people understand the recovery of adults and families living with co-occurring substance use disorders and psychotic and/or affective illness over the course of a lifetime. Helping individuals develop the skills and knowledge they need to take personal responsibility for their health and supporting individuals in their efforts to get on with life beyond illness has been Mary’s mission and she now brings that mission to the airwaves.
