Episode Description

"Golf use as an non-traditional path to pursue education and self improvement." The host, Ida Muorie will interview Robert "Rock" Robinson, co-founder of WPMJGA about his brainchild idea, and the programs' fifteen years of success. Robert "Rock" Robinson along with his childhood best friend (Raiford "Rai" Beasley) founded West Penn Minority Junior Golf Association, Inc. (WPMJGA). After Rock participated in a National Minority Junior Golf Association tournament in Phoenix, Arizona in 1993 and 1994, the vision was born to give better access to Afro-American youth to golf courses. WPMJGA program was officially established in December 1995, and the program started enrolling young girls and boys into the program in March 1996. The program's initial aim or mission was to expose primarily African American youth to the game golf early and use the game of golf as an educational vehicle. The WPMJGA goal today is used golf as an instrument to assist our young people to improve the conditions that are necessary to achieve fundamental, social and psychological well being. Ninety-eight (98%) of the participants have pursued an higher education.
