Episode Description

Public scrutiny of the courts is essential to ensure fairness and put a spotlight on racial, cultural or gender bias. To that end, court monitoring groups exist all over the country to keep a watchful eye and create an informed and involved public. This week, Crime Prevention Specialist Susan Bartelstone speaks with Marna Anderson from the WATCH program in Minneapolis, MN about what's involved in court monitoring. Then she takes a look at the issue of people who are bullied because of their race or religion, speaking with NYC Councilwoman Helen Diane Foster and a member of her African Muslim Teen Council and what's being done about it in NYC. Last up, she speaks with career criminal Felon O'Reilly, who was arrested 73 times, incarcerated 7 times and who's now doing standup comedy routines at correctional facilities and drug treatment programs all over the country bringing a message of humor and hope. He's extremely funny and very poignant. Laugh a little this week.
