The Rooney Rule: Quietly Changing the landscape of the NFL and NCAA
January 25, 2011
Hosted by Ida R. Muorie
"The Rooney Rule, affirmative action or just plain good business sense," that is the question Ida Muorie, Host of the Sportsmavericks Show will asked her special guest, John Wooten, Chairmen of the Fritz Pollard Alliance Foundation (FPA), an advocacy group that promotes diversity and equality in the NFL's hiring practices, and supports the use of the "Rooney Rule" in hiring practices of NFL Coaches and General Managers. The rule states, "Once the season is concluded, the head coaching position must be considered open and the club must fill the position in accordance with the interviewing guidelines. No club may make a commitment to a coach retained during the season that extends beyond the end of the club’s playing season. Any contract that seeks to make such a commitment will not be approved. This in no way prevents a club from ultimately hiring the interim coach on a full-time basis after fulfilling the interview process requirements." Ida will also explore the impact of the rule on the NFL and NCAA diversity hiring since the rules inception 2004.
