Episode Description

The nature of transactions is changing at an amazing rate. New models are emerging (and converging) in the way banking, finance, retail, communications and transport interact with people and money. Mobile payments, smart cards, contactless cards and tickets, digital wallets, digital IDs—and digital pickpockets. Loyalty points as money. E-commerce, m-commerce—now f-commerce? And that’s today. What's next? Cloud-commerce? This week's guest is described as “one of the world’s leading experts on digital money,” an “uber-techie," and “a grade-A geek." He's Dave Birch of Consult Hyperion and you will find him grade-A interesting. Will merchant-bank cooperation change the card company model? Will social networks have their own systems? Will parallel currencies challenge the national kind? In our digital age, what will the relationships between people, money and identity? Can chips, biometrics and cryptography create Dr. Who-type psychic identities? Will we see the end of money as we know it?
