Episode Description

National Geographic Explorer and freshwater expert Sandra Postel knows that if we want to ensure a safe environment and prosperous life for all of humanity in the 21st century and beyond, we must change the way we think about water. Our planet is covered with beautiful blue water, however, less than .01% of the world’s water is drinkable and renewable. A growing population and overuse has jeopardized our freshwater supply, which to sustain will require different policies, new technologies and a renewed commitment to be responsible stewards of this life-giving resource. The Colorado River sustains 30 million people yet human mismanagement has caused the river to run dry far short of its mouth in the Sea of Cortez. This month, in a grand experiment, scientists will flood the delta with water from the Hoover Dam Reservoir in what’s known as a “flood pulse.” Sandra Postel joins guest host Rachel Wold to situate this event in a desperately needed cry for a new ethic on water use.
