Episode Description

Growing up in Baltimore as the youngest child in a family prominent in the civil rights movement and local politics, Laura Murphy witnessed many of her family members run for election- and lose. She decided at a young age that she would carry on their legacy by influencing lawmakers rather than run for office herself. Today, Laura directs the Washington office of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU,) influencing Congress and the White Office on policy matters related to civil and human rights. As a leading lobbyist, Laura advances the civil rights’ perspective on issues such as marriage equality, women’s rights, voting rights, criminal justice and First Amendment issues. If you thought the struggle for civil rights lives only in history books, tune in on May 5 to learn how Laura Murphy continues to fight for Americans’ liberties today.
