In many respects, scathing and unjust criticism, whether justified or not, is quite often a disguised compliment. This is true to the perfectly valid extent that it only means you are achieving something of importance, a fact that makes your critics uncomfortable with the attention you are receiving. Even scholars of the human emotions now acknowledge that many people derive a certain savage satisfaction from denouncing those whom they feel are ahead of them a rung or two on the Ladder of Life. This mean-spirited gratification finds its most apt validation in the very useful cliche that 'no one ever kicks a dead dog.' It is also helpful to remember that, whenever a dog is kicked, it is because people derive some perverse feeling of importance from the act, and the bigger the dog, the greater the satisfaction.
