Episode Description

In the 1980s after the shooting of a mentally ill individual, the Memphis Police Dept decided to take a new approach to handling people in crisis. They developed the model for the CIT (Crisis Intervention Team), whose goal was to train law enforcement, mental health provider agencies and individuals and families affected by mental illness how to deal with someone in crisis. Twenty-five years later, the Memphis CIT program has had remarkable success – cutting injuries to police officers, developing a crisis assessment system for people with mental illness, reducing arrests and improving community relations. Its success has inspired 2,800 communities in 45 states across the country to start CIT programs. Listen in as Officer Vogt of the University of Illinois Police Department and 12 year veteran of CIT talks about his experiences on the CIT, and how you can work with local law enforcement to build this capability in your community.

Fear is Negotiable: Business Survival Skills 101 will focus on risk mitigation and business preparedness steps in a practical and realistic way, for any sized organization in any industry. This show will drive risk and preparedness topics from discussion to action, and really educate about why businesses must prepare, and then provide the knowledge to get it done. The topics we cover are related to current “hot topics,” such as workplace violence, technology resilience, emergency communications, the psychology of disaster, or cyber-attacks. At other times when there are no “hot topics”, issues covered will range from threat assessment, to human resource issues related to emergency management, to best practices in risk mitigation.
