We will talk with the magnificent Emmy Cleaves about the great healing and restorative power of proper Yoga practice, about the physical and mental aspects of Hatha Yoga Asana practice, including it's bio-energetic effects -- how it works. We will also talk about her 60 years of practicing Yoga, and her relationship with Bikram Yoga, which she has been teaching and practicing since 1973, as the Principal teacher at the Yoga College of India Headquarters in Los Angeles, and Bikram's Yoga Teacher Training (since 1993).

The great Yoga teacher Bikram Choudhury, in his Yoga lectures, asks “What’s the most important thing in your life? Do you want to live a good life? Do you want to live a long life?”

This is a show about Yoga, and how it addresses the fundamental questions and concerns of life. It will focus on some history of Yoga, especially in the West, what is Yoga, current trends and what it means, the practical application of Yoga, proper techniques, safety, effective use, precautions, and the reality. How the proper practice of Yoga is the best, safest, most scientific tool for improving the quality and longevity of one’s life. Jim Kallett and his guests will address the important things in life including health, happiness, success and prosperity, self-empowerment, backed up with research, stories, testimonials, and inviting input from you.

Jim Kallett

Senior Bikram Yoga Instructor Jim Kallett became a Certified teacher during Bikram Choudhury’s 5th ever Yoga Teacher Training in 1997. Jim is one of the original and select few instructors that Bikram hand picked to represent him by conducting posture clinics, seminars, and now lectures around the world. Due to his dedicated service, Jim is a senior faculty member of Bikram’s Yoga College of India International Headquarters in Los Angeles, California, and Bikram's famous Intensive Yoga Teacher Training, since 1998. With his extensive Yoga knowledge and experience, Jim has been instrumental in assisting with Bikram Teacher Re-Certifications, and has served as a Judge at 9 International Yoga Asana Championship-Bishnu Ghosh Cup Finals. He has coached 5 International Yoga Champions. Opening San Diego’s first ever Bikram Yoga school in 1998, Jim has co-owned and operated one of the biggest and busiest Bikram Yoga schools in the world.

Rajashree Choudhury

Rajashree Choudhury, five-time winner of the All-India Yoga Championship, brings years of experience to her teachings of Bikram Yoga and personal development. In conjunction with the International Yoga Asana Championships, now in its 12th year, she founded the USA Yoga Federation, a non-profit organization formed to facilitate her goal of Yoga becoming accepted as Sport. Rajashree has also produced the popular and practical DVD "Bikram Yoga for Pregnancy," does Yoga Seminars and Women's Retreats worldwide, and has unique expertise on the therapeutic and emotional aspects of Yoga practice. Emmy Cleaves

Emmy Cleaves first met Bikram Choudhury at a Yoga demonstration in 1973. After practicing with him somewhat skeptically, she visited India to investigate Yoga techniques for herself. She discovered there that his method and way of teaching was the most efficacious and precise. Upon returning to Los Angeles she devoted herself to studying and eventually teaching Bikram Yoga. Jill Weiss Ippolito

Jill Ippolito is the Founder and Executive Director of UpRising Yoga, and has been practicing and teaching yoga for over twelve years. She is dedicated to bringing yoga to incarcerated youth, foster youth and the communities they come from. Since 2011, UpRising Yoga has taught in juvenile detention facilities, group homes, schools and community centers. Her work includes Trauma Sensitive Trainings for all, not just yoga teachers. Jill believes that practicing yoga is something that can be done anywhere at any time and is for every body. Her overall mission is to ensure that yoga is seen as a healing modality and an effective tool to rehabilitate incarcerated youth in this nation. Lisa Leeman

Lisa Leeman believes that strong narrative and character-driven films can change the world, one story at a time, and that the path to social change is through the heart. Lisa’s groundbreaking first film, Metamorphosis: Man into Woman, won the Filmmaker’s Trophy at the 1990 Sundance Film Festival and garnered the top broadcast ratings on POV, PBS’s documentary showcase. Roger Ebert named Leeman’s One Lucky Elephant as one of the best documentaries of 2011. That film was broadcast on OWN as part of Oprah Winfrey's Documentary of the Month Club, and selected for the U.S. State Department's American Documentary Showcase. For the last twenty five years, Lisa has directed, produced, written and edited feature and short documentaries. Other notable works include directing the feature doc Out of Faith (PBS) & producing the feature doc Crazy Wisdom: The Life & Times of Chogyam Trungpa (Alive Mind Cinema). Lisa has collaborated with many acclaimed filmmakers, including Haskell Wexler, the renowned cinematographer with whom she co-directed Who Needs Sleep (Sundance, 2006). Lisa spent a decade editing award-winning social issue documentaries, including the acclaimed Made in LA, and films for Renee Tajima-Pena; Michele Ohayon; Micha Peled; Stanley Nelson, and others. Lisa has served as a judge at the Sundance Film Festival, the president of the International Documentary Association, and on the boards of the IDA and the National Coalition of Independent Public Broadcasting Producers. She sits on the faculty of USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, and has taught master classes on documentary filmmaking in China, Portugal, Jordan, & Malawi. Dr. Maren Nyer

Dr. Maren Nyer is the Director of Yoga Studies, Depression Clinical and Research Program (DCRP), Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Director of Professional Development for the Research Coordinators in the DCRP at MGH. In addition, she is an Instructor at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Assistant in Psychology at MGH. Dr. Nyer just received a competitive Loan Repayment Program Award for Clinical Research from the National Institutes of Health: National Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine to support her research on Bikram Yoga. She completed her pre-doctoral psychology internship (2009-2010) at MGH/HMS, after which time she worked as a post-doctoral fellow under the mentorship of Dr. Maurizio Fava at the DCRP until obtaining a staff position in September 2012. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Cornell University and PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Virginia. Dr. Nyer’s research interest is in the amelioration of mood disorders and associated symptoms, specifically developing and evaluating innovative treatments for depression. Dr. Nyer is the Principal Investigator on two studies. The first, a pilot trial of Bikram Yoga for the treatment of depression. The second, to adapt and evaluate Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills groups for patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and suicidal ideation. This research is supported by a Kaplen Fellowship and Livingston Award from HMS. Brian L. Tracy, Ph.D.

Brian L. Tracy, Ph.D. has been on faculty since 2003 at Colorado State University, where he is now an Associate Professor. His previous academic training included undergraduate and master’s degrees at Colorado State, a doctorate in exercise science at the University of Maryland, and a post-doctoral fellowship in neuromuscular physiology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. His main research expertise is human neuromuscular physiology with an emphasis on the effects of aging on the neural control of muscles and the effects of exercise interventions in older adults. His research has been funded by federal (NIH), non-profit, and industry sources. He teaches courses in undergraduate neuromuscular physiology and anatomical kinesiology, and graduate neuromuscular physiology. His lab’s neuroscience education outreach STEM program, Muscles Alive!, was launched in 2012. His lab published the first-ever scientific, peer-reviewed research paper on Bikram yoga in 2008, followed by another paper on Bikram yoga in 2013 and more recent research on the acute physiological responses to a single session of Bikram yoga. He has been a lecturer at the Bikram yoga Teacher Training since 2011, and provides traveling lectures on neuromuscular physiology and yoga research for lay practitioners and teachers at yoga studios.
