This week on Engage with Andy Busch, we begin a once-a-month special dedicated to the world of non-profits. Nonprofits are the 3rd largest employer in the United States and expanded even during the Great Recession. Helping us explore and understand the wonderful nonprofit sector, we are joined by co-host Lisa Dietlin of Dietlin & Associates to share her expertise as a philanthropic agent. In segment 2, we have Teresa Bartels and Karen Kay of The Gateway for Cancer Research to share their experience with cancer research innovation and funding. For segment 3, we have Sarah Berghorst of OneGoal – Chicago, a nonprofit aimed to support underperforming high school students reach their full potential and graduate from college. And lastly, we end the show with Margaret Trimer-Hartley of University Prep Schools in Detroit to talk about her work in the city’s longest-standing tuition-free public charter school system.

Andrew B. Busch is the editor of the global market and public policy newsletter, “The Busch Update.” He is a regular on CNBC’s Talking Numbers, which appears every day on Street Signs and Yahoo Finance. His views can be found on his website, andrewbusch.com, as well as CNBC and Yahoo. He was a panelist on CNBC’s Money in Motion from 2012-14. He was the host of “Politics and Money” on First Business from 2000-03.
For 22 years, he was with BMO Capital Markets and has written the Busch Update for the last 13 years. He was named BMO’s Global Currency and Public Policy Strategist in 2007. Based in Chicago, he is a recognized expert on the world financial markets and how these markets are impacted by political events. He provides clients with analysis on public policy issues for China, Europe and the United States.
On a regular basis, Andy consults with staff from Congress and think tanks on economic, financial market and tax issues. In 2011, Andy was asked to testify in front of Congress on the effectiveness of the 2009 Stimulus package. From 2004 to 2008, he was an outside advisor to the US Treasury Department and White House on the economy and financial markets. Andy had a similar role for the 2008 McCain campaign. He has met and advised the last three US Secretaries of the Treasury including John Snow, Hank Paulson and Tim Geithner. Andy is also a political consultant on campaign strategy for the 2014 US Congressional Mid-Term elections.

Jack Ablin is an Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer with BMO Private Bank. Mr. Albert is the Global Head of business developments at Pantheon, a global private equity fund investor. Teresa Bartels is the president of The Gateway for Cancer Research, a nonprofit organization that funds innovative cancer research all over the world. Bartels joined Gateway in 2014 after 15 years at Hallbart Consulting where she advised nonprofit and business executives in achieving organizational excellence through leadership coaching, strategic planning and change management. Bartels also served on the executive leadership team of United Way Worldwide where she formed a global coalition of United Way affiliates, now the world’s largest and most robust charitable network. William Beach recently joined the Senate Budget Committee, Minority Staff as its Chief Economist. He is responsible for the Committee’s economic analysis and for preparing key components of the Senate budget. Prior to this position, Beach served for 13 years as the director of the Center for Data Analysis (CDA) at The Heritage Foundation. As CDA Director, Beach supervised Heritage’s original statistical research on Social Security, crime, education, trade and a host of other issues, ensuring it is both rigorous in its technical scholarship and produced in time to help inform the public debate over the issue.
Before joining Heritage, Beach served as the President of the Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University. IHS is an international organization that provides professional and financial support for undergraduate and graduate students in the humanities and social sciences. Senator Bennett is a senior policy advisor at Arent Fox who works with a wide range of international clients. Sarah is the Executive Director of OneGoal – Chicago, an innovative, three-year college persistence program that identifies, trains and supports our nation’s most effective teachers to lead underperforming high school students to reach their full potential and graduate from college. Under her leadership, OneGoal – Chicago will partner with 50 teachers in 23 non-selective high schools to serve more than 1,200 Fellows in 2012-2013, and grow to partner with 38 Chicago high schools to serve 2,300 Chicago students by the 2016-2017 school year.

Jared Bernstein joined the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in May 2011 as a Senior Fellow. From 2009 to 2011, Bernstein was the Chief Economist and Economic Adviser to Vice President Joe Biden, executive director of the White House Task Force on the Middle Class, and a member of President Obama’s economic team. Bernstein’s areas of expertise include federal and state economic and fiscal policies, income inequality and mobility, trends in employment and earnings, international comparisons, and the analysis of financial and housing markets. In 2011, USA Swimming named two-time Olympic coach Frank Busch (Tucson, Ariz.) as its National Team Director. Jim Carter is Vice President of Government Affairs at Emerson, a diversified global manufacturing and technology company based in St. Louis, Missouri. Jerome Castellini is the founder, president, and chief investment officer of CastleArk Management, LLC. Chris Edwards is the director of tax policy studies at Cato and editor of www.DownsizingGovernment.org. He is a top expert on federal and state tax and budget issues. Former US Congressman Philip English is a senior government relations advisor at Arent Fox and serves as co-chair, along with former Sen. Byron Dorgan, of the firm's government relations practice. Marcy Euler is entering her third year as Executive Director of the Tucson Festival of Books. Currently she serves on the board of the Catholic Tuition Support Organization. Dr. George Wilson
As Executive Director of Circle Urban, George Wilson comes to Circle with strong and relevant ministry experience. He served as Executive Director for Chicago Youth Centers in the 1990’s. He also served with World Vision in Chicago in the early 2000’s as Executive Director of U.S. Domestic Programs. Dr. Wilson earned his Masters in Divinity from Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, and his Doctorate of Ministry Degree from North Park Theological Seminary. As a pastor and former church planter, he has a shepherd’s heart, and he understands well the necessity of total dependence on God in fulfilling His purpose.
