Episode Description

As the global knowledge economy transforms the nature of work and the skills that are required for success, a new breed of educators argue that children should learn technical skills at a young age. How early should children begin writing computer code? “Kindergarten,” says Dr. Allen Selis. Selis believes that American schools are at risk of creating a generation of students who are functionally illiterate in the fields of computer programming, engineering and design. In response, Dr. Selis launched Tech EdVentures, a Dallas-based educational technology company that specializes in coding for kids from Pre-K through Eighth grades. Over the last year, Tech EdVentures has brought classes in micro-chip programming, robotics, computer assisted design and computer programming to young children. In this session, Selis shares his vision of how education is about to change and why private-sector educational entrepreneurs will be the most important agents of change.
