Climbing the corporate ladder. Success. Making money. Isn’t that what many of us have been taught comprise the good life? I mean, we live comfortably and can afford a nice lifestyle with lovely vacations. It all should be good, right? Then, how come we don’t feel fulfilled? Why does it seem to get harder and harder to get out of bed and drag ourselves into the office? If you can relate to this story line, this episode may just be one you need to hear. Mary Miller shares her story of career ascent, misery in “living the dream” she worked so hard to achieve, and how she came to see the light on the other side of the tunnel toward a new and ultimately much more rewarding way to do life and career. She shares some of her key lessons along the way and how she has helped other women define their own version of success overruling the “shoulds” they have been told all their lives.

Alise Cortez, PhD
Dr. Alise Cortez is a Speaker and Development and Engagement Catalyst based in Dallas, Texas. Having developed her career within the Human Capital industry over the last 16 years, today she is focused on coaching individuals from ages 9 to 90 to celebrate who they are and ultimately navigate toward meaningful work-life integration. She also consults with organizations and conducts workshops to increase employee satisfaction, engagement, performance, and retention.
Alise earned a PhD in Human Development from Fielding Graduate University. Fascinated with how people choose and experience their careers, she focused her dissertation on meaning in work and its relationship to personal identity. Today, she is further developing her “modes of engagement” concept having conducted interview-based research with professionals aged 18 to 80 across multiple industries and is now writing a book about her findings.
Alise is also a college Professor of Psychology and a Gallup-certified Strengths coach. She has lived in Spain and Brazil, traveled extensively across Western Europe, South America, and parts of India, and has some language ability in Spanish and Portuguese. She is also a wife, a mother to a 12-year old daughter, and has served in various community service leadership roles in East Dallas. All these aspects inform Alise’s identity and how she seeks to integrate the work she does within her overall life.
