In today’s bustling times, we face personal, business, and cultural challenges that are volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous, also known as VUCA. These challenges require situationally aware, adaptive, and strong leadership. Enter flow: When time seems to stand still, the right decisions come easily, we experience a sense of heightened awareness, and optimal experience emerges. In this episode, Dr. Judy shares her research into the flow experiences of firefighters and how training impacts flow-based decision making. This research shows how we can consciously choose to maximize our personal flow experiences, while putting in place the conditions to help others maximize their flow experiences. Incorporating flow-based leadership practices facilitates and enables employees to better align talents to organizational mission, intensify innovation, improve productivity, and increase the bottom line. Ultimately, this extends to personal, organizational, and community well-being.

Alise Cortez, PhD
Dr. Alise Cortez is a Speaker and Development and Engagement Catalyst based in Dallas, Texas. Having developed her career within the Human Capital industry over the last 16 years, today she is focused on coaching individuals from ages 9 to 90 to celebrate who they are and ultimately navigate toward meaningful work-life integration. She also consults with organizations and conducts workshops to increase employee satisfaction, engagement, performance, and retention.
Alise earned a PhD in Human Development from Fielding Graduate University. Fascinated with how people choose and experience their careers, she focused her dissertation on meaning in work and its relationship to personal identity. Today, she is further developing her “modes of engagement” concept having conducted interview-based research with professionals aged 18 to 80 across multiple industries and is now writing a book about her findings.
Alise is also a college Professor of Psychology and a Gallup-certified Strengths coach. She has lived in Spain and Brazil, traveled extensively across Western Europe, South America, and parts of India, and has some language ability in Spanish and Portuguese. She is also a wife, a mother to a 12-year old daughter, and has served in various community service leadership roles in East Dallas. All these aspects inform Alise’s identity and how she seeks to integrate the work she does within her overall life.
