Episode Description

Tim Ryan, founder of A Man In Recovery Foundation and Chief Marketing Officer of Banyan Treatment Center will be featuring guest Darek Horan, recovering addict. From a 3 sport varsity athlete with straight A’s to homeless drug addict, he has lived two lives for the past 7 years and nobody had a clue. His use of opiates started when he injured his knee in wrestling, which ultimately lead him to heroin. He has lived it all; homeless, broken both spiritually and emotionally, alone with nobody to help due to his own actions which ultimately lead February 10, 2016, where he sat on Lake Michigan with a gun in his mouth. Thankfully, the gun misfired and it was at that point that he realized he couldn't "get better" on his own. After going to treatment, he immediately started to plug in to recovery. He worked the twelve steps, got a job, paid rent, and did what was suggested. Today he is an Outreach Coordinator for Banyan Treatment Center and a volunteer at A Man In Recovery Foundation.

Tim Ryan has dedicated his life to helping others find recovery. Tim’s moving motivational speech, From Dope to Hope (tm), chronicles his harrowing experience as a troubled addict who did drugs with his own son and his son’s friends, his incarceration and his life today that includes his own journey in recovery and his work in serving others. As Tim so convincingly says, “We’re taking one addict at a time from dope to hope!”

Tim also provides the community-at-large with valuable information about opiates and their devastating effects. Tim’s speech informs on the current landscape of heroin addiction nationwide, the surprising effects of heroin on the brain and body, and how to recognize and handle those who struggle with addiction to opiates and other substances.

Tim Ryan has shared his story and knowledge countless times before a variety of audiences, including students, educators, parents, treatment centers, 12-step programs, halfway houses and prisons.

Tim Ryan

Tim Ryan had a successful life, then lost it all because of an addiction to heroin, cocaine, other drugs and alcohol.

For years, Tim had great success in business and in life, despite a habit that was forming around “drinking and drugging.” But when he added heroin to the mix, Tim’s balancing act spiraled out of control. Often spending nearly $500 a day to support his opiate habit, his career and relationships suffered setback after setback.

Sentenced to seven years in the Sheridan Correctional Center for a number of drug-related convictions, Tim got clean and sober behind bars. However, “life on the outside” wasn’t working in his favor.

His wife divorced him. His son Nick, who he had introduced to heroin along with his teenage friends, continued to abuse the drug, caught in a seemingly hopeless trap. Six months after Tim was released from prison his son Nick died tragically from a heroin overdose.

Tim used Nick’s death as the inspiration to spread a message of hope and recovery to others, believing that if even one family could be spared the horrors of the disease of addiction, he would be making a difference. Today, in addition to running addicton recovery groups for addicts and families, Tim is the Chief Marketing Officer for Banyan Treatment Centers. He frequently speaks to school groups, corporations and others who care to hear his message. Most importantly, he is the founder of A Man in Recovery Foundation.
