Episode Description

Society is on a runaway train: with ever-changing technology and lifestyles, global violence, volatile economies, single parent homes, stunning headlines... and more. It's beyond stressful for adults to cope with, imagine what it's like for kids. Today's guest, Bob Brill, award-winning journalist and broadcaster, is also a prolific author. By contrasting two of his books, Tales of My Baseball Youth: A Child of the 60's (a memoir) and Al Kabul: Home Grown Terrorist (a novel) --the disparity in childhood today vs. yesteryear's Norman Rockwell paintings, is chillingly apparent. Though baseball is still the national pastime because it resonates most deeply with America's soul, far fewer kids have the opportunity to play because more fatherless homes have meant fewer dads who are coaches. And the backdrop of kids' lives is now more closely aligned with the picture Brill paints of homegrown terrorists. Dr. Carole shares tips on how we can slow the train and bring back more wholesome times.
