Episode Description

Kathryn interviews psychologist Azmaira Maker PhD, author of “Where Did My Friends Go? Helping Children Cope with a Traumatic Death”. Since the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook in 2012, there have been over 160 school shootings in the United States. Dr. Maker offers a one-of-a-kind therapeutic children’s picture book, specifically designed to help young children work through the traumatic loss of friends, loved ones and community members. Kathryn also interviews cancer survivor Cheryl Krauter MFT, author of “Surviving the Storm: A Workbook for Telling Your Cancer Story”. Cancer treatments have become so successful that the number of cancer survivors will reach an estimated 20 million in the U.S. by 2026 according to The American Cancer Society. Yet, while the rate of survivorship increases, so does the need for help in dealing with the trauma after cancer. Krauter reaffirms that survivors need to speak up and be heard about how cancer has touched their lives.
