GASHAW TAHIR FOLLOWING FOOTSTEPS NOBEL PRIZE WINNER - Waangary Maathai
In 2004 as most people will recall, Kenya's Wangari Maathai became the first African woman to win the Nobel Prize for her sterling work on the environment. Wangari Maathai started a campaign to plant tens of millions of trees across East Africa.
Gashaw Tahir, an Ethiopian, seems to be following in the footsteps of Wangari Maathai and has so far collaborated with Ethiopian youth to plant 1 million trees on 11,000 acres of land in Ethiopia.
Gashaw said recently in an interview with America.gov "My ultimate vision is making Africa green again," he says. "That inspires me, touches me, and moves me into action."
Gashaw started off by recruiting a few young people who then went on to recruit some more, until he had hundreds of people enthusiastically helping to re-forest barren mountainous land.
His motto is "making Africa green again, not only by just planting trees, but by planting fruit trees that will sustain, that will make a difference in people's lives."
