The criminal case against Julie Baumer centers on debunking the myths about Shaken Baby Syndrome. Julie was convicted in 2005 of 1st degree child abuse stemming from injuries sustained by her infant nephew while he was under her care and sentenced to 10-15 years in prison. On appeal, Julie’s conviction was overturned after the baby’s brain scan revealed he suffered a stroke. Julie was released from prison in 2009, but the prosecution appealed to both the Michigan Court of Appeals & the Michigan Supreme Court but was denied. Then Julie was tried a second time. After a lengthy re-trial, experts left no doubt that abuse did not cause the child's injuries. The jury found Julie not guilty and officially exonerated her in October 15, 2010. Julie wrote several novels while in prison unrelated to her case as well as An Undeserved Sentence. Today, Julie owns & operates Lil Harry’s Closet, a Michigan-based silk screen & embroidery company.
