Mathieu Deflem



Mathieu Deflem is Professor of Sociology at the University of South Carolina. His specialty areas include law and society, policing, terrorism, international security, and popular culture, especially music and fame. In the fall semester of 2010, it was announced that he would be teaching “Lady Gaga and the Sociology of the Fame,” a university course that soon gained worldwide attention in the media. To date, Dr. Deflem has taught the course on five occasions and he has also integrated his studies on fame and celebrity in his other teachings. Dr. Deflem also publishes widely on his research specialties, including several papers on the conditions and dynamics of fame, especially in the case of Lady Gaga’s meteoric rise to world stardom. He is often asked to comment on the conditions and impact of our contemporary celebrity culture.
