Chief Washington started his law enforcement career with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office October of 1983. In 1985 he joined the Detroit Police Department. He served in numerous capacities throughout the department: patrol, Gang Squad, undercover work in the Narcotic Section, Violent Crimes Task Force, as well as The Traffic Enforcement Unit. Chief Washington rose through the ranks of police officer, sergeant, lieutenant. In July of 2009, Sheriff Benny N. Napoleon asked Raphael Washington to join his staff as Deputy Chief accepted the position as the Deputy Chief, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. He supervises the operation of the Road Patrol, Warrant Enforcement Bureau, Narcotics Unit, Morality Unit, Internet Crimes, Special Services, Mounted Unit, Marine Division, Special Response Team (SRT), the Fugitive Apprehension Service Team (FAST), and the Violent Task Force Unit. Chief Washington oversees the Dickerson Facility Jail (Hamtramck), as well as all of the Wayne County Circuit Courts. Chief Washington also served for six years in the Michigan National Guard as a Military Police Officer. He has attended Kalamazoo Valley Community College where he studied Criminal Justice and he is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University School of Police Staff and Command. Chief Washington is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Session 248. Chief Washington has also studied at Harvard University earning a certificate in Leaders in State and Local Government. He is a member of Southeastern Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, Wayne County Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS).
