By age 13 he started shooting with his dad and helped run the Carlsbad gun club for two years. From age 13 to 17, he won 4 New Mexico state competitions and earned a reputation as a sportsman and a stiff competitor. In 1976 he was invited to the Olympic trials but, because of the high cost to participate, he had to decline. Kevin went on to attend college and continued to compete and won state competitions in both Kansas and Texas. He taught his children the knowledge of safety in firearms at early ages and they went on to compete and win state competitions as well, his son first and soon after, his daughter. From 2003 to 2009, Kevin coached the Tarrant County Clay Target Program for kids winning 20 trophies
