Calvin Cottar


Born in 1963, Calvin followed his family to Kenya and a full on guide by age 15. As an apprentice professional hunter with Robin Hurt Safaris in Tanzania for a year before qualifying to be a full PH. In ’89 he returned to Kenya forming Wildlife Management Consultancies Ltd, created specifically to train and assist multiple landowners to successfully benefit from 'wildlife user rights', requiring a full gamut of wildlife management skills. In ‘93 Calvin started consultancy with the Community Wildlife Service department of KWS initiating a training program for the problem animal control unit. In ’98, with his family, he built the unique Cottars 1920's Safari Camp near Maasai Mara National Reserve, which has become one of Kenya's pre-eminent safari destinations. A gold level Kenya Professional Safari Guide Association member, Calvin works with communities and international conservation bodies to help landowners see wildlife as a benefit and to change policy and perceptions.
