Dr Leeja Carter


Dr. Carter is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Athletic Training, Health, and Exercise Science (ATHES) and Director of PEAK: a sport, exercise, and performance facility at Long Island University-Brooklyn that provides individual and group sport, exercise, and performance (SEP) services, promotes community health and wellness through ongoing research and sport/exercise psychologically related programs, and offers the Give Program. Dr. Carter’s research foci include: 1) the social and cultural factors that contribute to health African American women’s health, 2) African American women athletes’ experiences in sport, 3) cultural competence in the field of sport and exercise psychology.
Dr. Carter’s current research and writing projects include:
• The Relationship Between Colorism and Sexism on Media Representations of Professional African American Women Athletes
• The Role of the Caregiving on Mental Health Among African American Women.
