Gary Mendell
Gary Mendell is the founder and CEO of Shatterproof, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the devastation that the disease of addiction causes to families. Mr. Mendell founded Shatterproof after losing his son Brian to addiction in 2011.
In three years, Shatterproof has already accomplished a lot. The organization has helped get life-saving legislation passed in 10 states, created a robust community of ambassadors, fundraisers, and advocates, and launched national awareness events like the Shatterproof Challenge Rappel. Shatterproof works every day to tell stories that will erase the stigma of addiction.
Prior to Shatterproof, Mr. Mendell founded and was CEO of HEI Hotels & Resorts. During his tenure as CEO, he oversaw a portfolio of ~40 hotels, with revenues of ~$650 million and value of ~$3 billion. Since then, HEI has grown to over 65 hotels with revenues of over $1.5 billion under management. Prior to HEI, Mr. Mendell was president of Starwood Lodging Trust.
