Dr. Sinkfied has had unique opportunities to see and understand needs of patients of color, in interaction with nursing practices in local organizations. Racial disparities are prevalent within healthcare. There is often lack of understanding within cross-cultural interactions. She became inspired to promote a better understanding of these complex interactions between nurses and the patients for whom they care, to effect greater trust in that relationship. Her experiences as a professional nurse embedded in racism led her to study transcultural relationships in nursing. Nurses in their patient care engagement, come face to face with boundaries that are shadowed with implicit biases and histories which create frustration for both nurse and patient. Her doctoral project “Story Care” provided an opportunity to see transcultural interactions in nursing using story, to outline a model of caring for all, which allows nurses the language to identify care actions for healing in diverse communities.
