Nurse Turnover White Paper

Nurse Turnover White Paper

This White Paper represents in depth interviews with nurse executives from across the USA, revealed consistent themes when analyzing the causes & impact of nurse turnover as well as critical next steps. Interviews took place 12/19 – 5/20 and included nurse executives from critical access hospitals to systems with over 2000 beds, including nurses in acute and ambulatory settings. Interviewees had, on average, 24 years in leadership, including time as team lead, manager, director, and executive. Poor, or ineffective leadership is the cause most frequently associated with turnover. Poor communication skills, inability to handle toxic behaviors, inexperience with crucial conversations, and difficulty building trust were among the specific leadership shortcomings identified. CNOs consistently recognized that nurses are being promoted to leadership without adequate development or support.
