Tonatiuh Melgarejo

Dr. Tonatiuh (Tona) Melgarejo is a Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences in California, where he distributes his time between teaching future veterinarians in internal medicine, working with patients in the clinic, and research in species-spanning medicine dedicated to improving the health of companion animals. Dr. Melgarejo earned a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the National University of Mexico in 1988, a Master’s degree in Clinical Sciences from Purdue University in 1993, and a Doctorate in Comparative Gastroenterology from Purdue University in 1998. His post-graduate clinical specialization includes an Internship in Small Animal Medicine & Surgery from Texas A&M University, and a Small Animal Internal Medicine Residency from University of Pennsylvania. He has been working in academia for the past 30 years at six different universities in the US. Dr. Melgarejo’s research areas are focused on clinical nutrition, development of new antibiotics, and the role of the microbiome in health and disease. He is dedicated to a vegan lifestyle and embraced whole food plant-based nutrition in response to the work by Dr. T. Colin Campbell.
